“For Such a Time as This: Pushing Forward with Faith and Purpose in the Workplace”

Rowlanda Cawthon

Dean, College of Business
Northwest University

Rowlanda serves as Dean of the College of Business and Associate Professor of Management at Northwest University (NU). In addition, she is the faculty lead for the Business Leadership and Consulting Concentration for the Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs.

She worked in the criminal justice profession for eleven years before transitioning to higher education. While employed with the Department of Corrections, Rowlanda held positions ranging from Business Analyst to Communications Consultant, overseeing media relations in multiple prisons and field offices in Washington State. In her last role, Rowlanda served as a Correctional Unit Supervisor, managing a 104-bed living unit at Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women.

At NU, she is known for her passion and willingness to go above and beyond in her role as a professor and dean. Rowlanda actively engages in the NU community and understands the value of serving as a mentor and source of inspiration for students and colleagues. She is the Managing Principal for Rowlanda Cawthon & Associates, a consulting firm she began in 2019.

Rowlanda is a board member for the Foundation Trustee Board at Northwest University, Salvation Army Advisory Board for Seattle, and The Resilient Project. Rowlanda earned a B.A. in Communications (1999) from University of Puget Sound; M.A. in Organizational Leadership (2006) from Chapman University (Ft. Lewis Campus); and Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership (2014) from Brandman University.

Speaker Topic:
There is an invisible thread that has weaved throughout Rowlanda’s personal and professional life. She believes firmly that she would not be where she is today had it not been for Jesus, the invisible thread, leading and guiding her through every phase of her journey. Rowlanda will share her story of faithfully transitioning from corrections to higher education, navigating through loss and grief, and rising to the occasion when appointed as Northwest University’s first African American dean. She underscores that real transformation comes when we push forward and surrender to God’s purpose for our lives. Through the practice of graceful surrender, we create opportunity to integrate faith and work more seamlessly. Rowlanda will provide insights on making meaningful choices and seizing the moment when God has placed us where he wants us to be “for such a time as this.”
