Speaker Topic:
Some of us are blessed with a dream job: fulfilling, motivating, rewarding, exciting, productive. Couldn’t be better! Don’t worry—there will be something in my comments for your circumstances. Others struggle to find meaning and engagement in the workplace. For some of us, maybe in the past, maybe now, or maybe in the future, frustration with our work might challenge our Christian perspectives on work itself. Work—goal oriented physical and/or mental effort—is part of God’s pre-fall creation. Tending the garden of Eden was part of God’s ‘good’ creation: Genesis 2:15 “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” After the fall, work became more challenging: Genesis 3:17-19 “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food.” Work itself is good, our ability to work well can be challenging. So how do we honor Christ when our time at work seems unfulfilling, stressful, even damaging to our mental health? Dr. Stephen Hill, a qualified physician, biotechnology executive and graduate of Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, will share his insights from the workplace.
