“Liminal Space: How Ordinary Transitions Become Extraordinary Transformation and a Pathway to Your Future”

Jon DeWaal

Executive Director and Founder
Liminal Space

Jon DeWaal is the Executive Director and Founder of Liminal Space, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people navigate through major life transition. He provides 1×1 transition guidance, leads transition groups called PIER groups and facilitates workshops at The PIER Learning Center at Liminal Space that teach transition skills.

Jon attended The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology receiving his Masters of Divinity in 2007. He has taught on calling and career at The Seattle School as an adjunct professor. Jon also served as a fellow at The Allender Center for Trauma & Abuse. Through his education, mentoring and the struggles and discoveries of his own transitions, Jon found a more natural fit for his career – creating Liminal Space, an organization that combines the often segregated disciplines of counseling, spiritual direction, life coaching and career counseling. Over the last 8 years, his research has shown that major transitions are places where people can find their desired path and become stronger, or where they can get stuck –sometimes for years. Having a plan, helpful guidance, and a clear focus can make all the difference in the world.

Jon has been married for 12 years to his wife Annie. They have three boys – Grant, Jude and Levi. He is a member at Bethany Community Church at the Shoreline campus, where they’ve been attending as a family for the last 6 years.

Speaker Topic:
Few “bigger” questions get asked more often than, “What should I do with my life?” More often than not, the question gets asked during a season of change that holds plenty of ambiguity and uncertainty. By its very nature, the question implies that we exist for a reason and are uniquely created for a purpose. Our task is to discover this reason and purpose, live from it, and influence the world by it. This talk will explore how ordinary change – the kind we each go through in our personal and professional lives – brings with it both turbulence and opportunity. The “tool” we have to understand both is transition – a spiritual discipline intended to form us, but through which most of us want to simply endure and end. If we engage transition with curiosity, courage and community a desired future can be discovered and a plan made to get there. The “in-between” moments of life are where God does his best work, if we learn to wait and let it form us.
